"Quality After School Care In A Friendly, Safe And Fun Atmosphere"

ABOUT OUR PROGRAMS

Coordinator: Jennifer Babin

The After School Program is organized and run by the Canterbury Community Association. The After School Program runs Monday to Friday from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The age categories per group are 4-5, 6-8 and 9-12. The program has First Aid and CPR certified staff and volunteers scheduled into a weekly program. The children per staff ratio for the 4-6 age group is seven children to one counselor. The children per staff ratio for the 7-12 age group is ten children to one counselor. The staff pick up the children at nearby schools and take attendance every day, with a strict sign out policy. Office Hours are Monday to Friday from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. For questions regarding the After School Program, please contact Jennifer at 613-738-1177.

Under the direction of the After School Program Coordinator, each category has a Team Leader who designs specific programs and activities geared to each particular age group. On a daily basis, the program consists of active gym and outdoor games, arts and crafts, puzzles and board games, drama activities, drawing, teamwork challenges and free time. A Homework Club is held Monday to Thursday on a sign up basis, to allow children to complete their homework with supervised help while they are at the Centre. We also offer movie days, swimming, skating, seasonal celebrations and other special events on an occasional basis. P.D. Day programs are also offered, if enough interest is expressed by the community. Please contact the Centre to find out more information about P.D. Day Programs.

PROGRAMS ACTIVITIES

Swimming
Held during the spring months, children aged 6-12 will be given the opportunity to go swimming once/month from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Canterbury Pool. As mandated by the City of Ottawa Pools, lifejackets are mandatory for children who do not meet the minimum swimming requirements. Children aged 4-5 will not be given the opportunity to swim, due to the high supervisory ratios mandated by the City of Ottawa Pools for children of this age group.
Skating
Held during the Winter months on Wednesdays from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Brian Kilrea Arena next door. A helmet is mandatory for children learning how to skate. Children must bring their own equipment from home with their name clearly labelled on all equipment. Children learning how to skate must be able to skate without being supported by a counsellor.
Special Events
Special events may include seasonal celebrations and sports activities, etc. Notices will be sent home in advance and the events will be lots of fun for children, staff and parents.
PD Days
The fee is $35.00/child/day if they remain at the centre all day. If field trips outside the centre are taken, there may be an extra cost added to the fee in order to cover bus fares and admission fees. A minimum of 7 children must be registered in advance in order for the program to run. At 2:30 p.m. all children in the P.D. Day Program will join the regular activities planned for the After School Program on that day.
Homework Club
Homework Club will be held Monday to Thursday from approximately 3:45-4:45 p.m. A senior counsellor will supervise this program and assist children in areas where they may have problems understanding a direction or concept. Children may be asked to leave the program if they are being disruptive. Parents will be informed if this occurs. Once children have completed their homework, they will return to their age group’s regular activities.

Programs Calendars
Calendars are developed for each month with seasonal themes and are placed in the After School Program display window at the centre.

Sign Out Of Children From The Program
Parents/guardians must sign out children at time of pickup from the program. It is also the program's policy to inform the child's leader supervising the specific age group that the child is leaving for the day. Emergency contacts must be included on your registration form.

Accounts
Post-dated cheques for all ten months are due when you register your child for the After School Program. Cheques must be post-dated for the first of every month (Aug, Oct-June) made payable to CCA. The August cheque reserves your child’s spot in the program and covers the month of September. There will be a service charge for NSF cheques.

Refund Request Form
Must be filled if you decide to cancel from the program. Partial month refunds not given.

Financial Assitance Request Form
Must be filled as soon as possible, as there is limited funding.

Programs Fees
Full-Time: $155/child/month
Part-Time: $90.00/child/month (up to 10 days/month). Any days of care needed over the 10 day allotment will be an extra $10.00/child/day. Part-Time users must submit a monthly schedule which states which days care will be required by the After School Program. If an unscheduled day of care is needed, the parents must contact the Coordinator by noon on that particular day.

CCA Memberships
In the Fall of 2008, the CCA introduced a two-tiered pricing structure for its programs, with one price for members and a slightly higher price for non-members. Up to this point, the After School Program has been exempt from this membership fee. However, going forward into the 2010-2011 programming year, it will be necessary to purchase either a $10.00/year family CCA membership or an individual $5.00/year CCA membership in order to receive the After School Program at a member’s price. A CCA member’s price for the After School Program is $155.00/child/month. A non-member’s price is $10.00 more over the course of each session (i.e. Fall, Winter, Spring) for a combined amount of $30.00 over the course of the 10 months of the After School Program. This CCA membership is valid until August, 2011. A family membership allows all members of the same family at the same address to register for as many programs as they wish at the member’s price, while an individual membership permits either the adult member OR one child to register for programs at the member’s price. You would add either the family membership fee of $10.00 or the individual membership fee of $5.00 to your August 2010 cheque (i.e. your August 1, 2010 cheque would be either $160.00 for an individual membership or $165.00 for a family membership). Some of the money from membership fees helps to cover our overhead, but much goes back into the community, such as into our annual scholarship program. We hope that you will join the Association, not only to save a bit of money on our programs, but also to support us in the work we do for the community.
